BREAST HEALTH

There is so much attention on breast cancer, but not as much on BREAST health.  There are things we can do to help our bodies stay strong.  Don’t try to do everything all at one, make changes gradually, that way they will be more long-lasting.  It feels good to take responsibility for our own health.  For additional help contact a local naturopath or  alternative health care provider for additional ways you can keep your breasts healthy.

BASICS

There are two very important concepts regarding breast health.

FIRST, is to reduce the toxic load on the body.  Meaning, it is important to be aware of things we are ingesting, wearing or doing that makes our liver, and our body work harder than it needs to.

SECOND, it is important to eliminate toxins from our system.  Not only is it impossible to eliminate our exposure to all toxins, but our body produces toxins as part of it’s everyday functions.  That is why we pee, poop and sweat :).  We need to help our body do these things better.

REDUCE TOXIN EXPOSURE

  • Quit smoking.
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol and caffeine.
  • Manage a healthy weight.
  • Eliminate foods with additives, preservatives, artificial colors and chemicals. Read labels.  The food around the outside edges of the grocery store tends to be less processed and free of these additional chemicals.
  • Pay attention to the DIRTY DOZEN.  These items tend to have higher loads of pesticide usage.  It pays to find organic sources of these produce items when possible.
  • Minimize over the counter and prescription drugs.   Substitute essential oils and herbs whenever possible for those day to day things we all deal with.
  • Exercise regularly.  It helps reduce stress.  We forget that stress chemicals are as toxic for our systems as any foreign chemicals in our environment. Jumping on a trampoline stimulates the movement of lymph facilitating drainage in the breast area.
  • Do not wear tight bras or ones with under wires. Take your bra off whenever you can. Bras cut off the lymph drainage and damage this important process.
  • The skin is our largest organ.  The fabrics we wear, the products we use to clean our clothes and the products we apply to our skin all have an impact on our health (especially deodorants).  “GREEN” isn’t just a fad, it is important for our health.  Pay attention to the labels on these items as if they are as important as food labels.
  • Reduce or eliminate sugar from the diet.  Numerous studies suggest that it affects our immune system, making us more vulnerable to cancer in general.

ELIMINATE EXISTING TOXINS

  • Drink 8 glasses of pure water daily (more specifically half your weight in ounces).  The best water filtering system is reverse osmosis.  Avoid water stored in plastic.
  • Stay regular.  Avoid constipation.  . “In almost every case of breast cancer, a history of constipation can be demonstrated.” (Pelton).  Drink plenty of water (half your weight in ounces daily), exercise, and get enough fiber and raw foods.
  • Increase oxygen in your environment by decorating with plants.  Aerobic exercise also elevates oxygen in our cells.
  • Dry brush your skin daily with a natural skin brush in a circular motion toward the heart, emphasizing the areas where lymph nodes are concentrated, neck, shoulders, underarms, inner thighs etc.  It is an invigorating way to start the day.  A breast massage is also a good idea.  Do one when you take off your bra at the end of the day.  It feels wonderful.
  • Saunas, steam baths, massages, herbal baths and wraps, assist in the detoxification process.
